1907 SILVER VESTA CASE Clifton (?) Suspension Bridge Match Safe by AS |
A
super silver vesta case / match safe with an engraving of a Suspension
Bridge over a deep gorge on one side, and lovely patterns and a vacant
circular cartouche area on the other.
It
is thought that this engraving may be based on the early “approved
design” of I. K. Brunel's Clifton, Bristol, suspension bridge where the
towers were of a different style to those eventually built.
The
detail on the vesta shows the sun, clouds and gulls above the bridge
with a gorge/valley below, this may well depict the artist’s impression
of the Avon gorge.
I cannot be certain this is the Clifton bridge, so I will have to leave you to decide on these points.
The Birmingham hallmark is for 1907-8 (h) and the maker’s mark AS. The lion passant and the date letter are repeated inside the lid.
This interesting vesta is in good condition; the hinge and spring are very good and the lid snaps shut and fits well. The interior gilding is good as is the striker on the bottom.
The
case measures 1.51 inches (38 mm) high x 1.1 inches (28 mm) wide
(excluding side suspension rings) x 0.36 inches (9 mm) thick.
Weighs 16.9 grams.
